FireStick: Screen Switching Inputs or Waking On Its Own

Modified on Mon, 6 Apr at 8:39 AM

Device: Amazon FireStick / Fire TV
Issue: The TV changes input unexpectedly, turns on by itself, or powers off while the Budvue app is running.

Use this article when: Your TV is switching inputs, turning on, or turning off on its own in a way that interrupts Budvue signage — and you have a FireStick connected.

Do not use this article if:

  • The screen is showing Amazon content after going idle — see FireStick: Screen Showing Amazon Content or Movie Trailers instead.

What This Means

This is caused by HDMI-CEC — a feature that allows the TV and connected devices to send control signals to each other. When HDMI-CEC is active, your TV remote or another connected device can unintentionally control the FireStick (or vice versa), causing unexpected input switches or power changes.

Steps

Step 1: Disable HDMI-CEC on the FireStick

  1. On your FireStick: Go to Settings → Display & Sounds → HDMI CEC Device Control.

  2. Turn it Off.

Expected result: FireStick no longer sends or receives CEC signals.

Step 2: Disable HDMI-CEC on Your TV

Your TV may also need CEC disabled. The setting name varies by brand:

TV Brand

CEC Setting Name

Samsung

Anynet+

Sony

Bravia Sync

LG

SimpLink

Panasonic

VIERA Link

Other

HDMI-CEC or similar

Look in your TV's settings menu and disable the CEC-related setting.

Expected result: TV no longer sends or responds to CEC signals from the FireStick.

Step 3: Remove Interfering Apps

If other apps are installed on the FireStick alongside Budvue, they may be sending commands that trigger display changes.

  1. Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications.

  2. Uninstall any apps you do not need.

Best practice: Only the Budvue app should be installed on your store's FireStick.

Resolution

After disabling HDMI-CEC on both the FireStick and the TV, the unexpected input switching should stop.
