FireStick: Black Rectangle on Screen (4K Max)

Modified on Thu, 14 May at 3:43 PM

Device: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max

Issue: A large black box is covering most of the screen while Budvue content is displayed behind or around it.

Use this article when: You see a large black rectangle overlaid on the screen on a Fire TV Stick 4K Max device.

Do not use this article if:

  • The entire screen is black — Check power and HDMI connections first.

  • You have a BuzzTV device — This issue is specific to the Fire TV Stick 4K Max hardware.

Steps

  1. Restart the FireStick: Hold the Select button (center circle) and the Play/Pause button simultaneously for 5–10 seconds. Also, confirm you are using the original Amazon power cord and wall adapter; underpowered USB ports on a TV can cause display glitches.

  2. Adjust the Display Resolution: The FireStick may be trying to output a resolution the TV doesn't fully support.

    • Go to SettingsDisplay & SoundsDisplayVideo Resolution.

    • Try setting it to Auto, or manually lower it to 1080p 60Hz.

    • Shortcut: Hold Up + Rewind on the remote for 10 seconds to cycle through resolutions automatically.

  3. Check Accessibility Settings: Go to SettingsAccessibility. Ensure Screen Magnifier and all other overlay options are turned OFF.

  4. Toggle HDMI-CEC: Go to SettingsDisplay & SoundsHDMI-CEC Device Control. Turn it Off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back On. If the box returns, leave it Off.

  5. Reinstall the App & Reconnect: If the rectangle persists, the app data may be corrupted.

    • Go to SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications.

    • Find the Budvue/Clickspace app, select Uninstall.

    • Reinstall the app from the Amazon Appstore.

    • Note: You will need to generate a new 5-digit access code from your Dashboard to reconnect.

  6. Check Hardware & Updates: Plug the FireStick directly into the TV (remove any HDMI extenders). Allow the device to sit for 25 minutes to ensure all background Amazon system updates are complete.

Expected result: The black rectangle is removed, and the Budvue menu displays in full screen.

Resolution

If the screen displays correctly after these steps, no further action is needed.
